What We Know About American Horror Story Season 8!

AHS2

We were all left on the edge of our seats after the twisted ending AHS Season 7: Cult. I have undoubtedly watched all seasons at least twice and continue to be hooked to the show as every episode leaves you wanting more. Seasons are too short in my opinion, but its good to end something good instead of watering it down with confusing, nonsensical additives like many other shows that have gone on for way too long. I like that each season is different and yet some of them tie into others with minor details. I actually wouldn’t mind another season of Coven  or even Hotel lol. But I guess thats a longshot. Noneltheless, the show deserves praise for its originality and inventiveness. And although it feels like the last season just ended, AHS Season 8 is underway as stated by the shows director Ryan Murphy. Never fully revealing his concepts for any of his seasons, Murphy always seems to be good at deception, small leaks of information at a time gets his audiences very anxious. However, there are a few things that we know so far about the next season:

It is said to be set in the future “18 months from last week”

Murphy tells his audiences on April 6, 2018 that the season was set “18 months from today” (Oct. 6, 2019) according to the Hollywood Reporter. Other statements taken from Murphy revealed him saying 10 -20 years in the future, but again deceit and secrecy for AHS is his motive most times. Although if truthful this could mean…

The theme may be Nuclear War

It would not be surprising that Murphy is building off the current issues across the globe due to the recent chemical weapon attack in Syria. In addition to this, October 6th would follow the 58th anniversary of the day US President JFK told Americans to prepare for war by building nuclear bomb shelters. Both of these statements could allude to the setting of a not-so-distant, possibly dystopian future that could place America into a war. And because this war deals with nuclear weaponry…

It is possible the next installment could be labeled “American Horror Story: Radioactive”

Murphy, of course, will not confirm if such speculation is true. However this would be cool to have such a setting especially if it is a dystopia. I did like the last season however it was different in comparison to the rooted idea of AHS; cult was too real, touching on topics that were too present. AHS is usually more creative and more abstract and I think a nuclear or dystopian theme could bring the show back to its original premise.

The show also includes the usual cast and some newcomers

Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Kathy Bates will make a return as headliners along with recent recurring actors such as Cheyenne Jackson, Leslie Grossman and Adina Porter. Newcomers Joan Collins will be a lead for the season and possibly Angelica Houston.

Leads Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will also be directing a few episodes and production will begin this summer

Marvel Series: Reviews

Several Marvel series have made their way to television in recent years. Most of them have been underwhelming in terms of action and being faithful to the comic series and some have been surprisingly decent. Here are a few:

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

agents

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has successfully been running on the ABC network for around five seasons now and has gained fairly high praise. I have watched a few episodes here and there and have failed to see the hype in the show’s popularity. Although a few notable faces have appeared such as The Superior, Deathlok, Hellfire, Ghost Rider (the main staple in Season 4), Lash, Peggy Carter and The Clairvoyant from the Elektra series. In addition, Quake and “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez make great additions to the show’s roster, but the show is still centered around the lives and actions of the agents. It is a decent show, but I am just not in love with it.

Marvel’s Inhumans

inhuman

I was never really a fan of the Inhuman comic series; the series focusing on the adventures of the Inhuman royal family consisting of such familiar faces as Black Bolt, Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon, Triton, Crystal and Maximus the Mad. Although not a fan I figured that watching the show would change my opinion and further peak my interest in continuance of the series. I was sadly mistaken, the show only added to my uninterest, it did not perform to the level I assumed it would and the events moved too slow for my taste. There was no groundwork for the characters cast as they did not portray the characters in their best abilities, especially in the case of Iwan Rheon as Maximus. I am not sure if it was the script or his acting, but this role did not suit him which is surprising because he played an excellent villain on Game of Thrones as Ramsay Bolton. Some say the budget was an issue, mocking the cosplay-like outfits and the flashy but sub-par effects that only furthered the lackluster production design. Others put the director at fault for giving us a flat and uninspired rendering of the series. No matter the reason, “The Inhumans” is said to have been a flop and may be cancelled for the next season.

Marvel’s: The Gifted

the_gifted

If any Marvel show has ever impressed me so far, it has definitely been because of this show, “The Gifted”. Although a lot of the characters are either fictional or based off of real comic heroes, there are still many faces in the series we do recognize like Blink, Thunderbird, Polaris, Shatter, Sage and Beautiful Dreamer. The series offers breathtaking originality with a combination of familiarity. We are taken on the journey with the Strucker Family, a seemingly normal suburban family with secrets all their own. The father is a district attorney for an organization that captures and holds mutant runaways and the children both have abilities hidden from their parents. However, events unfold where the children’s powers are revealed and both parents have to take them on the run from the government who seek to capture and hold the children. Their escape leads them to a group of mutant outcasts who dwell in an underground community which from then on leads the show to get even more exciting. It is especially interesting to see how the connection between the children amplifies their abilities making them nearly indestructible forces. The series is set to return for Season 2 in the Fall.

Marvel’s: Runaways

runaway

Marvel’s The Runaways is a show that I most recently began to watch although it originally premiered in November 2017. I never actually read The Runaways comic issues, but the show is said to accurately depict what is written in the pages. Opinon-wise the show is the most abstract from the other Marvel TV series which is a good thing. The teens involved do not display the typical abilities except for Molly Hernandez with superhuman strength and invulnerability, which makes for a truly original skill set and story, where such different abilities can effectively be showcased and grown upon. What is also unique about the series is that the premise focuses on six teens from different backgrounds who are uniting against a common enemy – their own parents. Their parents are apart of a criminal collective called The Pride, whose deal with three mythical giants called the Gibborim in the past , turned them into a villanous group whose purpose is to satisfy these giants with young female sacrifices every year in order to turn the world into a peaceful utopia.

Marvel’s: Cloak & Dagger (Upcoming)

cloak and dagger

When I initially saw the commercial I was not sure what I was looking at, but as the promo went on I began to get thoroughly excited. I remember reading Cloak and Dagger comics a while back and being surprised at how much I began to favor them as a team with a blend of unique abilities. I think it is interesting to see this combination in a television series and this could be Marvel’s next big hit similar to the impressive “The Gifted” series. Actors portraying Cloak and Dagger are Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt. Although the pair may seem like fresh faces they both have an extended background in television and film. Holt started off as a “Disney Kid” appearing on several different shows, then moving onto a few films and also making her mark as a music artist. Joseph has also appeared in a few films and television series. For those who are unfamiliar with the pair Cloak and Dagger shared a traumatic experience as teens, being subject to a criminal chemist who began testing experiemntal drugs on runaway teens, in their case a synthetic form of heroin. After surviving the injections both teens escaped and Dagger (Tandy Bowen), gained the ability to form daggers of light, being able to purge addictions from others and the ability to heal with her daggers; meanwhile Cloak (Tyrone Johnson) gained abilities of intangibility, teleportation and the ability to link to the “darkforce dimension”.

TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People 2018

TIME Magazine recently revealed their list of 100 Most Influential People. The list is diverse, inspirational, and expresses triumph in that it lists many people that have overcome adversity and are impacting the world.

There are too many to list, but take a look at the video below and hopefully you will be just as inspired by the list as we were.

Series Review: American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace

ACS - Ginanni V

I should preface this by saying that there are spoiler alerts!

American Crime Story:  The Assassination of Gianni Versace recently wrapped up its eight-episode run on FX.  However, critics and fans, including myself, are wondering why the fashion house icon was named in the title at all.  The first episode of the show’s stint opened with the actual assassination of Versace; a chronological reverse of the real-life events, as we all know that he was the last to be murdered by his killer, Andrew Cunanan.  This is always a luring tactic.  It draws the viewer in, especially if it was a good ending/beginning introduction because you want to see how it happened.  However, with this season of ACS, it backfired.  Beyond the first episode, there were just brief flashbacks to Versace’s life and career during mid-season, and most of those did not include direct contact with Cunanan.

The primary focus of the limited series was on Cunanan’s killing spree; a spree that spanned over four months and four states with five victims.  Cunanan was hiding in plain sight in Miami, Florida, even though he’d since been included on the FBI’s Most Wanted List.  Cunanan was a very interesting person.  He was money hungry, a pathological liar, obsessive compulsive, and a murderer to boot.

Ultimately, the show failed to connect with viewers because we had different expectations.  Some of those expectations were more interaction between Versace and Cunanan and to understand if they had any sort of relationship and more about Versace’s life because Versace was very reclusive.  This was only to find that aside from a brief encounter, they had no real ties, connections, or anything even remotely relative.  Cunanan was just obsessed with the designer.

However, Cunanan lived an interesting life that honestly could’ve held a series on its own, without trying to tie it to Versace.  He moonlighted as an escort, lied about everything from his childhood to his financial status and wealth (he was dirt broke) to telling people about non-existent relationships with celebrities such as Versace.  He was truly a spectacle, and the show would have been just as intriguing had viewers known they’d be watching American Crime Story:  The Killing Spree of Andrew Cunanan.  You’re already interested, right?

It is worth noting that the performances by the lead characters, and some supporting characters, were great.  The show stared Glee’s Darren Criss as Andrew Cunanan, Edgar Ramirez as Gianni Versace (I personally think that Ramirez is one of the greatest actors of his generation), Penelope Cruz as Donatella Versace, and Ricky Martin as Antonio D’Amico.  Who’s the Boss’ Judith Light also had a strong performance in her supporting role as Marilyn Miglin, the wife of one of Cunanan’s victims.  I was particularly wowed by Cruz’s transformation into Donatella Versace, as well as Ramirez’s transformation into Gianni Versace.  If anything, at least it had good casting.

Can You Smell What “The Rock” is Cooking?

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been pretty busy these days. The once highest paid actor in Hollywood has been making his rounds, and can you smell what The Rock has been cooking? It’s beef! The former WWE wrestling champ opened up about his Fate of the Fast and Furious co-star, Vin Diesel, and their falling out. In a recent interview, when asked about the old feud, Johnson remarked “Fundamental differences in philosophies on how we approach moviemaking and collaborating. It took me some time, but I’m grateful for that clarity. Whether we work together again or not.” Though the response was civil, we’d lean towards the “or not” in that statement.

The beef is still cooking, but it smells fresher this time around. On a lighter note, Johnson made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where he left a note behind for his once WWE rival, John Cena, knowing Cena would be appearing on the show soon. Kimmel read the note to Cena which threated “He wanted me to remind you, ’If you ever act up,’ he said to you, ‘I will knock your teeth so far down your throat you’ll have to stick a toothbrush up your ass to brush them.’” Ouch! Cena had a few choice words of his own after telling Johnson through the screen, “I’m not going to take that!”

Johnson and Cena had a minor real-life feud when they were both stars in the WWE, but both have since confirmed they are really good friends now. All three of these guys are multi-millionaires, movie stars, and can knock you out, literally! So, while Johnson and Diesel may not be coming to a theater near you in a movie together any time soon, it’s cool to know Johnson and Cena have left their matches behind in the ring. You never know, there may even be a rematch in the future.

While the nostalgia kicks in, and we sit back and wait, you can check-out an old match between the two below.

DAMN! Kendrick Lamar Wins Pulitzer Prize

kendrick-lamar-variety-hitmakers

DAMN!  Rapper Kendrick Lamar has made history recently after receiving a Pulitzer Prize in music for his album, DAMN.  This historic achievement was announced on Monday.  This is the first time in 102 years that a music genre outside of non-classical or jazz has been given the award.  However, even greater than that, this is the first time that a hip-hop artist has ever won the award.  DAMN is Lamar’s fourth studio album.  It was released in April of 2017 and instantly praised as a classic by critics and fans alike.  It has since won five Grammy awards.

Kendrick Lamar is a rarity in today’s generation of hip-hop.  He is conscious, contributory, and raps relevancy.  This, no doubt, is a huge win for Lamar, but also for the hip-hop community.  It is good to see that skilled rappers are still winning.

Black Panther Claws Through Box-Office Records

Black-Panther-Throne-1200x806Is it too cliché to start of a sentence with “long live the king”?  Well, long live the king!  King T’Challa that is.  Marvel Studio’s Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman, has broken numerous records in only an eight-week run, with the latest being surpassing The Titanic on the top grossing movies of all-time list.  King T’Challa is sitting quite comfortably on the throne.  In 2014, when Marvel announced that it would be making a Black Panther movie, undoubtedly Marvel knew that they were taking gamble.  It would be the studios first release starring an all-black cast.  Up until it’s announcement, and it’s official release, it was the only superhero film released in the MCU with a black character at the forefront.  There was Don Cheadle’s War Machine in Iron Man and Anthony Mackie’s Falcon in Captain America:  The Winter Soldier that had major roles in the MCU releases, but only as supporting characters.  After being introduced in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, skeptical fans were – uh, less skeptical.  The King of Wakanda proved that he deserved his own film, impressing both critics and fans alike.

Fast forward to current day.  Having only been released in February 2018, the film has continued to break records; let’s go over a few.  Even before it hit theaters, the film broke presale records, having sold more advanced tickets than any superhero movie before it – yes, including the MCU movie titans, The Avengers.  And, only six weeks in, the film passed the domestic sales of The Avengers taking in $626 million to their $623 million.  It is also the highest grossing film by a black Director.  A record previously held by F. Gary Gray’s The Fate of the Furious which ended with $1.23 billion in ticket sales.  Five weeks into the film’s release, it was still No. 1 in theaters.  Such a run hadn’t been seen since 2010’s Avatar.  Currently, with domestic sales of $665.4 million, it has passed The Titanic making it to position No. 3 on the all-time top selling movies list.  The film now stands with $1.3 billion in sales.  With the release of Avengers:  Infinity War this month, it is more than likely that the aforementioned flick will break some of those same records.  However, with Deadpool 2 following that release, it could affect the movies numbers.  Nevertheless, right now, King T’Challa is enjoying a well-deserved reign.  Did I mention that it was a good movie?
